Calvin Cooke

Calvin Cooke had been born in Cleveland, Ohio but moved to Detroit in 1960 to work at the Chrysler plant. Though he had been playing guitar for several years at the time of his encounter with Felton Williams at the Church of the living God, Cooke was entranced by the ethereal sounds and found himself performing for the congregation as well. When word got around church that Williams had a basement studio and would record anyone who walked in, Calvin approached him about recording a song he had written for his siblings the Gospel Supremes. Up until then, Double U had recorded only secular music, but with “Sinner Man,” Felton knew he had achieved a powerful sound, one that required an entirely new label to properly convey its transcendent message.
