The only "out of town" artist to record for Columbus, Ohio's Capsoul label, the Elijah Hawthorne-helmed Ebonies were headquartered in Greenville, South Carolina. Elijah’s Ebonies would briefly feature a young Ann Sexton, then going under the name Mary Sexton, on their Gitana-issued debut 45 “I Confess” b/w “Get Out of My Life Girl.” Following the Superior label’s issuing of “Pure Soul” in 1970, Moss picked the instrumental A side up for re-release on his Loren imprint, re-christening the group the Ebonites. “Pure Soul” would be resurrected in 1974 as “Hot Grits!!!,” with Moss adding his own vocal over the Ebonies’ Hammond-funk workout. Elijah Hawthorne passed away in May of 2011. He was 73 years old.
