Born in the bowels of the Bowery, the Sponsors blew up in the New York Underground as the Hand Grenades in 1976. The quartet of Bobby Kern, Dave Martin, Steve La Cava, and Jon Pellicoro were long Island Express regulars, commuting to the city every few days for pick up gigs at Max's, the Danceteria, Tramps, Tier 3, and CBGBs. In 1978, the group cut "Demo To London" b/w "Coma Dos," issuing both sides on their own HG label the following year. "Our goal was to get it onto CB's jukebox," Pellicoro recalled. "It was out one and only success."
