In 1979, "She'll Make Everything Right" by Chicago four-piece Schoolboys won a locally coveted slot on WKQX's Hometown Album Vol. II. Frontman Frank Jalovec had recently been escorted out of a Wisconsin A&W and told "We don't want your kind here." With that, a defiant Jalovec had WKQX credit his track to "The Kind".
"The name stuck, but the original line-up did not. Jalovec replaced Stan Skora, Chris Massa, and Carlo Iaccino with a pair of talented players he'd encountered on the club circuit who better matched his power pop aesthetic." Guitarist Frank Capek and bass player Mark Gardner were plucked from Love Craft, an extension of popular and durable Chicago psych-rock band H.P. Lovecraft. After adding drummer Frank Sberno, a renewed, reinvigorated, and three-Franked second Kind got off on the right foot with new manager Mike Scheid, a sharp-eared radio promotion rep who had worked for Chrysalis and Warner Brothers.
