Notes About the Release
In 1982, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak presented the US Festival, conceived as a sort of music & tech Woodstock in San Bernadino, California. Though largely forgotten, Woz's three day, twelve million dollar extravaganza was a big deal for the 200,000 in attendance that Labor Day weekend. Trade show grade presentations of computers, video games, robots, lasers, and other innovations stood alongside performances by Tom Petty, Pat Benatar, Herbie Hancock, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, The Kinks, The Ramones, and The Grateful Dead. The dome-shaped Sensonics Theater housed four projectors and eight channels of stereo for "Journey to the Central Sun", a multimedia show described as a full immersion, proto-IMAX piece sci-fi psychedelic trip. Emile Canning directed the twenty-minute program. The musical component was powered by the violin of Mark Josephson and the keyboards of songwriter/producer Ken Stover, who today cites the show's inspiration as "the sound of OM, which powered our craft beyond the gravitational pull of our mind into the stillness of more expanded places." The music might be described as high energy prog fusion with a new age slant; cinematic and unabashedly affirmative -- music for beating the odds and winning at life. Chick Corea stopped by the Sensonics Theater to compliment the group. A barely-distributed and heretofore undocumented cassette preserved the audio program, with cover art by the creator of the MTV logo. The tape gives Very Special Thanks "to God in everyone everywhere for everything". Our digital reissue adds an epic, previously unreleased alternate take of Modulation Del Sol.
