Calm is a Polaroid still waiting to develop.
Just after Mohinder and right before Duster, Calm surfaced to feed on the wage-depressed suburban Gen-X malaise. Future Duster guitarist Dove Amber replaced Marc Bianchi on their four-song, self-titled EP, a decidedly heavier affair that required his unique crunch. The San Jose trio reimagined Drag City as a stoner-emo concern, with Albert Menduno’s punishing rhythms pinned tightly beneath Clay Parton’s fuzzy bass and drawling vocals. A ’90s nugget if there ever was one.
