Chugging guitars, garbled glass vox, and heart-on-the-sleeve laments of lost love and old houses… Econochrist sent more than postcards back to their Little Rock hometown after transplanting to Oakland in 1988. Pop punk—the East Bay’s greatest export—was still a few years away from going global via Green Day, but their peers Crimpshrine, Jawbreaker and Samiam were infecting the next generation of Warped Tour aspirants across the BYOFL underground. Emerging from the gully between Chino Horde’s ’90-’93 post-hardcore transition and Everyone Asked About You’s ’96-2000 midwest emo embrace, Red 40 sparked up in 1994 for three magical Little Rock summers, a few dozen shows, a track on File 13’s We’ve Lost Beauty comp, a 7” on Lee Buford’s Landmark Records, and little else. Bassist/vocalist Ben Nichols split for Memphis to form Lucero and invent heartland punk in the process, and other than a short-run discography CD at the tail-end of the century his teenage Red 40 trio has gone largely unnoticed.

Until now. The 17th entry in our ongoing Hand Screened series, Waiting For My Song compiles Red 40’s complete Poynter’s Palace recordings onto a single LP (fans looking for the 1994 Crystal Studios demo, sit tight). A fold out poster is adorned with photos, flyers, and an essay from Nichols that gives crucial context to his early work. The hand-assembled LP is packaged in a screed printed chipboard jacket and is limited to 500 copies.
