As post-hardcore was coming unglued in the mid-'90s, Oakland, California's Cars Get Crushed shoplifted the dynamic ferocity of early emo and forged an unholy alliance with noise. By the summer of '96 the quartet had recorded a pair of albums under the glazing eyes of Matt Anderson at his Bankers Hill crash pad, but turned to Jeremy Goody at Oakland's Polymorph studio for a third—and ultimately unreleased—LP.

"We were managing a lot of creative tension," bassist Paul Keohler reflected. The band was born in Gravity's post-hardcore orbit, but were feeling the pull towards something more mainstream and getting some interest from established indie labels. "Those consonant choruses... we were subverting the angular dissonance with hooks," Koehler continued. But as months passed with no concrete deal materializing, five of these nine songs were dispersed on a pair of 7"s, the rest shelved. The band waited three more years to issue Evolution To Thrust—their proper third album—on Naomi Diamond's Mod Lang imprint and broke up shortly after.

30 years later, Numero and CGC have reassembled this lost "third" album under the watchful eye of Jeremy Goody, remastering and remixing from the original 1996 masters, housed in a handsome, hand-screened chipboard jacket with accompanying insert, and pressed in a limited edition of 500 copies.
