As Vietnam-era freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Arrogance formed over an appreciation for both Sabbath and Sgt. Peppers, concocting a Southern-fried hybrid of the two great tastes during rebellious sets at Tobacco Road coffee shops and off-campus house parties. Securing a production deal from Reflection Sound Studios in Charlotte, the astute underclassmen built a rollicking songbook of red clay rock and rambling psych. When half the group missed the enrollment deadline for sophomore year, the remaining members ordained Arrogance a softer ensemble, rendering obsolete these energetic recordings. Issuing albums on Vanguard and Warner Bros. later in the decade, the heavy rock of their advent was never revisited by the enduring Tarheel combo. Culled from the original quarter-inch masters and available for the first time ever, Knights Of Dream offers a unique peek into the Southeast’s burgeoning college rock scene at its most truant.
